Why does it have to be so hard to find a hairstylist? Well guess what friends, its also hard to find clients. It seems like there is a Hair Salon on every corner in every city around the nation. Well there is, lol. With so much competition out in Minneapolis and other amazing cities how can we find the right stylist? How will we know when we find them? What do we look for? Don’t worry I’m here to help.
So here is a short list of things to think about when searching for the perfect stylist for you.
*Does your stylist carry a quality brand of color and hair products? This is very important to how your color turns out and the integrity your hair is left with. Not sure what quality lines are? Talk to other stylists. I personally love L’anza, but there are some other great companies out there. Do your research friends. the difference between L’anza and L’oreal is huge and can be the difference of icy blond and yellow.
*Does your stylist fit in your budget? This is an important factor for a lot of us. I do believe that you pay for quality, but its important for your stylist to be upfront about the estimate of what its going to cost. It’s very hard to nail down an exact price on color especially with color corrections or massive transformations. It is nice to have an estimate. I personally charge by the hour and estimate how many hours it will take.
*Does the salon appear to be clean? This is a biggy for me!!! I always check out the bathrooms before I go anywhere. Clean bathrooms mean clean business. In salons its also important to look at the sink bowls. Are they clean? Free of hair? Is the stylist’s station clean? Is there hair in their instruments? Cleanliness is infection control.
*Does your stylist listen to your wants and needs? We all have had that stylist who dis regarded everything you said and just did what they wanted. This is completely unacceptable, your hair your rules. It is also important to listen to your stylist as well. If they tell you that you will destroy your hair trying to pull that black box dye out to an icy blonde, you should probably listen. We have spent thousands of dollars in education and countless hours behind the chair and we know our craft. Cosmetology is a mix of chemistry and art. We know what chemicals don’t mix and sometimes what you want is not what is achievable. Keep the lines of communication open.
*Do you love their personality? This is important to building a great relationship with your stylist. I for one feel like all of my clients become my friends. We are going to hang out while I do your due for several hours every couple weeks. I want to know how your family is? How your job is going? and If you have had a hot date? ( Only if you want to share)
* Most importantly, Do You TRUST Your Stylist? Do you feel in your gut that they have your best interests in mind? Do you feel at ease in their chair? Do you know your secrets are safe as well as your hair? When you ask for a half inch off will she cut half an inch? This is the deal breaker! Trust builds relationships, friends and clients! Let me know how I can build your trust?
